Attendance redAttendance Recovery

An Attendance Recovery program is a voluntary opportunity for students to make up missed instructional time outside of the regular school day. Instead of being a penalty, it is a supportive program designed to help students catch up academically and improve their school attendance.

Why your student might be invited

Your child may be offered a spot in an Attendance Recovery program if they have school absences, as missing even a few days can make it harder for a student to keep up in class. In Attendance Recovery, students will do the following:

  • Students work with certified teachers in a supportive setting to receive extra help with missed assignments and core subject areas like math and reading.
  • Sessions are designed to be engaging and can be offered before or after school, on weekends, or during school breaks.
  • The program is not punitive; it is focused on getting your student back on track.
  • A student may be enrolled in ELOP and Attendance Recovery.

Participation can help your student recover up to 10 days of missed attendance per school year.  Your school will provide you with specific details about the schedule and content of their program.

Foundational academic support

  • Targeted one-on-one or small-group tutoring: Certified teachers and trained staff provide individualized support to address specific learning gaps identified during absences.
  • Homework assistance: Supervised sessions allow students to catch up on missed homework and current assignments, reinforcing classroom lessons.
  • Literacy and numeracy programs: Focused activities help younger students (TK–3) strengthen foundational skills in reading and math.
  • Credit recovery courses: High school students can use attendance recovery sessions to re-take courses they have failed, using online or in-person curriculum.
