Crisis Prevention Intervention, De-escalation and Restraint
Exeter Unified School District utilizes CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) prevention training to teach staff strategies that focus on de-escalating situations and keeping people safe. CPI training teaches people how to recognize, prevent, and respond to crises. EUSD has two in-house CPI trainers. The majority of staff trained participate in Verbal Intervention Training. This is a hands-off program which instills the confidence and skills to verbally de-escalate disruptive behaviors. Staff that are responsible to respond to significant behavior concerns are trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. This provides staff with the skills to safely recognize and respond to everyday crisis situations, including safe disengagements and restrictive interventions. Restrictive interventions are used as a last resort to keep students and staff safe, and are only used for as long as absolutely necessary. Exeter Unified does not utilize mechanical restraint or seclusion.
For the 2024-2025 school year one student has been restrained for safety reasons.
